A Warning at Sea

Paul Reads the Risk
A prisoner offers counsel
Paul warns that sailing will bring danger to cargo, ship, and passengers. The centurion and other leaders prefer the pilot’s judgment and decide to continue.
Confidence is tested
The ignored warning establishes the vulnerability of the voyage. Paul may be a prisoner, but his attention to circumstances makes him a source of insight the recognized leaders overlook.
Hope Disappears

The Sea Becomes Chaos
The crew loses control
The storm prevents navigation, and the ship’s crew lightens the vessel by throwing cargo and equipment overboard. With sun and stars hidden, those aboard abandon hope of survival.
Paul receives assurance
An angel tells Paul that he will stand before Caesar and that the others will survive. The promise does not remove the storm; it gives the endangered group a reason to endure it.
The Crew Stays Together

Survival Requires Community
An attempted escape
Sailors try to leave in a small boat, but Paul warns that their expertise is needed. The soldiers stop them, keeping the crew together as the storm continues.
Bread strengthens the passengers
Paul gives thanks, breaks bread, and urges everyone to eat. The shared meal restores strength and recalls the presence of the risen Lord amid danger.
The Ship Breaks Apart

A Rough Landing Saves Lives
The vessel strikes a reef
The ship runs aground and begins to break up. Soldiers consider killing the prisoners to prevent escape, but Julius intervenes.
Everyone reaches shore
Some swim and others cling to pieces of the vessel. The rescue is not a smooth arrival, yet the promise that all will survive comes true through collective action and unexpected protection.
Malta Offers Hospitality

Strangers Become Hosts
The islanders welcome survivors
The people of Malta receive the shipwrecked travelers and build a fire. When a viper bites Paul, they first interpret the event as punishment, then mistake his survival for proof he is divine.
Healing creates a different bond
Paul prays for Publius’s sick father, and others on the island are also healed. The islanders honor the travelers and supply what they need to continue to Rome.
